Social Search: Tempur-Pedic “Ask Me” Commercial

Social-search People trust their friends more than Google’s algorithm. That’s why more and more people seek advice and guidance from their networks on Facebook and Twitter before making purchases. Google knows this and mattress manufacturer Tempur-Pedic, does as well.

Many companies now include Facebook and/or Twitter URLs in their ads, but Temper-Pedic’s latest Ask Me commercial is the first one that I have seen that tells people to ask their friends on Facebook and Twitter about their product before making a decision to buy. That’s a bold and brave move in my opinion.

Basically Tempur-Pedic is saying, “Hey we understand that you are constantly bombarded with marketing messages on a daily basis. We know you’re savvy enough to detect the bullshit that is so common in that messaging, and we know that you know that when visiting our website we’re going to deliver that very same bullshit to you because it’s our job to convince you that you need our product without a shadow of a doubt. So go ask your friends about us. We have absolutely no way of knowing whether they’ll say good things or bad things, but we know that’s what you’re going to do anyway so let us step out of your way for a second and stop insulting your intelligence.”

  1. So glad you picked up on this, too! I thought this approach was ingenious. If you’ve got it–rather, if others say you’ve got it–FLAUNT IT. What other companies would do as well, or could have such confidence instructing people to conduct social searches?
