Last month, I talked about why it’s important for brands to incorporate Instagram Stories into their social media marketing efforts. As promised, this month I will go over tips and tricks for creating more engaging stories.
How To Create Engaging Instagram Stories
If you are anything like me, you are a visual learner. For this blog post I will be using a photo of a very handsome subject: my dog Harvey!
So, let’s get started with four ways you can make your Instagram Stories stand out!
Instagram Story filters are similar to the filters available for the photos on your feed. To access these, simply swipe right on the photo. These are great for creating a mood. Here is the same photograph using two different filters.
The use of text adds context to your Instagram Stories—helpful when the photo cannot tell the story on its own. Don’t feel limited to only use the standard white text. You can change the colors, do a drop shadow effect or even use your finger to write out words.
If I had prettier finger writing skills I would have an example, but sadly I was not blessed with this prowess. So, all I can show you are these adorable hearts I drew all by myself! Play around with the color and brushstrokes to find the effect you are looking for.
In these photos, you can see the dramatic effect of drop shadow. To do this you create the copy twice: once in a lighter color and once in a darker color. Then you lay one of them over the other and viola! I also included an Upland Brewing Company tag in this photo.
As discussed my previous post, tagging partners, influencers and top fans is a great way to increase awareness and engagement.
Instagram stickers include geo-location, timestamp, temperature, seasonal icons, hashtags and polls.
Use the geotag to engage with people in a certain location, this can also help to increase followers in this area. Add a hashtag to join the conversation on that topic.
The poll sticker is a fun interactive option and allows for instant feedback.

As fun as Instagram Stories are, don’t forget that ultimately they need to fit into your overall marketing plan and should have strategy behind them. It’s a great platform to launch a new product or service, promote a contest or grand opening and connect to the community.
Add a call-to-action when appropriate, but don’t put one on every photo or video. For example, you can show a series of new products and on the very last photo, share the website address or store hours.
