Your Social Media Contest Prize Will Make Or Break Your Promotion

Your social media contest prize will make or break your promotion. Besides promoting your contest, the prize you offer is the most important factor in determining the success of your campaign.

Social Media Contest Prize Best Practices

We’ve run a lot of contests for our clients across multiple different channels. These five social media contest prize tips will help guarantee that your next promotion is a success.

1. Prize should have wide appeal

The wider the appeal of your prize, the more likely it is that a larger number of people will enter to win. It’s that simple.

2. Prize should be worth the effort required to enter

Don’t ask people to submit a 10 minute video explaining why they love your product for a chance to win a $5 coupon. That’s a lot of effort for a very small reward and you’ll get little, if any, participation.

3. Bigger is always better

Big prizes bring big excitement. Winning $1000 is a lot more fun than winning $10, right? So is winning free burritos for a year as opposed to a single burrito. The most successful social media contests we’ve managed for brands have all offered a major grand prize.

4. But if you can’t give big, give many

Perhaps you can’t afford to give away $1000 or free burritos for a year. Consider rewarding 10 people with $10 each or 20 people a free burrito. The effectiveness of this approach comes from people’s perception of having a greater chance of winning something.

5. Prize should be relevant to your brand

Now I know I’ve said make your social media contest prize big with wide appeal, but you don’t want to just give away an iPad, for example, because they’re perceived as big prizes with wide appeal. You’ll get people entering who only care about the iPad and not your brand. If you insist on offering that iPad as a prize, find a way to make it relevant to you. For example, a publisher could give away one loaded with their latest ebook offerings.

Now, go forward, and have a great contest!
