Interview With Senior Social Media Manager Chad Richards

Our Senior Social Media Manager Chad Richards has seen the social media landscape change dramatically during his 9 years at Firebelly. Below, he shares some of his greatest challenges as a social media manager and offers advice for those interested in becoming one.

What is the most challenging part of being a social media manager?

Unplugging.

Social media never sleeps, but just like one of the trusty electronic devices I’m always staring at, it’s draining to be always on. Unlike these devices, I need to unplug to recharge.

What brand do you feel has the most exciting/engaging/creative social media program? Why?

I see the numbers for the brands we work with so I know those are exciting and engaging.

Besides clients, I love what Denny’s is doing on Twitter. I’d love to sit down and shoot the shit over a Moons Over My Hammy with their social team. Their tweets always put a smile on my face.

How do you stay on top of the latest trends in social media?

A lot of reading. I don’t know the last time I read an actual book, but I’m always reading industry blogs. Actually, I take the book part back, I did recently read Jay Baer’s Hug Your Haters and enjoyed it.

Words of advice to someone starting a career in social media marketing?

Be flexible and know that what you’re doing today is not what you’ll be doing a year from now. Or maybe even tomorrow.

The only constant in this space is change—new platforms, new algorithms, new technologies—it’s part of what makes this role so challenging and exciting at the same time.

What is your dream car? Vacation?

I have one thing on my bucket list: visit all 50 states.

I’ve been to 32, including Hawaii and Alaska; my dream vacation would be taking a road trip for a few weeks to visit the rest. I guess my dream car would then be anything that comfortably got me around the country.

If you were not a social media manager, what would you be doing?

I could see myself writing ridiculous listicles for BuzzFeed.

My AOL screen name way back in the day was mediaman7, I was editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper, i majored in Media Arts & Technology in college, I’ve done freelance writing for magazines and prior to joining Firebelly I was involved in film and TV production. So it would still be something media related.
