Not investing in social ads to amplify content.

The amount of time and money spent growing your audience and crafting amazing content will be worth nothing if all of those adoring fans and followers never even see that content you worked so hard to produce.

Do you think all of your Twitter followers see everything you tweet? Check your Twitter Analytics. You may be surprised at how few actually see what you’ve posted.

Now, go check Insights on your Facebook page and see how few of your fans see anything you’re publishing on that channel. (Don’t feel bad, we see the same with Firebelly’s accounts on Twitter and Facebook, too.)

Check every social media channel you’re on and you’ll see the same thing: people aren’t seeing your content.

This has upset many brands comforted by the dream of a social media “free ride” for so long, but it’s time to wake up.

The reality is this:

1. You will have to pay for people to see your content
These “sites” are publicly traded companies with employees to support and shareholders to make happy.

2. Advertising works
Online, on TV, on the radio and, yes, even in print. Billions of dollars would not be spent every year across all mediums if it did not.

Thinking of jumping ship?

I’ve heard some suggest they’re going to jump ship—abandon these larger channels for smaller ones to avoid having to pay for their content to be seen.

This could be the subject of a follow up post about the second biggest social media marketing mistake brands make.

But for now, I’ll say this:

This does you no good if your audience is not on these other channels.

Don’t expect your customers to create an account on a new site just because you don’t want to be on Facebook anymore. And, trust me on this, eventually these smaller channels will roll out advertising of some kind if they haven’t already.
