7 Tips And Tricks For Getting Over Your Writer’s Block

writer's block

It’s a tale all too common: you open your computer ready to write the next best blog, article or press release. Only to see the blank screen just stare back, taunting you…you’ve got writer’s block!

Overcoming Writer’s Block

Let’s make a pact to not let the blank screen control us! End procrastination and slay the beast that is writer’s block with these handy exercises:

1. Stop over-thinking!

Often times our biggest enemy in the writing process is over-thinking. If you find yourself in this situation, get out of your head and just start writing.

Not sure where to start?

Write a list of ideas or concepts you want to include. Then fill those ideas in with whatever comes to mind. Don’t worry about how well its written or if it flows at this stage, just get the thoughts out on paper. You can always clean it up in the editing process.

Once you start to write, you will find the words come to you.

2. Check something else off your list.

So maybe the words aren’t coming to you right now. Take a break and complete a different task. Accomplishing something, even if it is small, can build your confidence enough to take on your most daunting task.

3. Sleep on it.

So this one only works if your deadline isn’t ASAP. If you have time to wait until tomorrow, then do it. A little R&R might just be what the doctor ordered. Tip: keep a pen and paper next to your bed.

You might wake up with the the answer to your writer’s block prayers!

4. Get up and move.

This has to be my favorite trick! If your writer’s block is bogging you down, just take a break and be active. Go for a walk around the block, do 50 jumping jacks, perform a couple sun salutations, dance to some good music… you get the point.

You may even consider going for change of scenery, working from somewhere else can make a big difference.

5. Good tunes solve all things.

Whether it’s a favorite record or a go to Spotify mix, the right soundtrack can be all you need to get the words out. I cannot write without music, my creativity is amplified by the beats.

Just don’t be surprised if/when you catch me dancing while typing!

6. Do something mindless.

Ever notice that you some of your best ideas come when you are walking the dog or in the car? When you are having a particularly annoying writer’s block, try doing something mindless. If you are at home do the dishes or laundry. If you are at work clean your desk.

When you take a break from forcing content, it just might come to you.

7. Read

Research your topic or read something by your favorite author. Reading what others have to say is a great way to ignite the creativity in you.
